THE SUPPLY CHAIN INTERVIEW
While weathering the storm has long been the goal of many supply chain leaders, especially in the particularly trying times those the world has experienced in recent years. Now, instead of being defined by geopolitical volatility and trade disruption, leading organisations are redefining resilience as the ability to anticipate shocks, adapt in real time and emerge even stronger out the other side of uncertainty.
At the forefront of this transformation is Dean Bain, Senior Vice President of Supply Chain at Coupa. With more than two decades of specialised industry expertise spanning manufacturing, logistics and enterprise software, Dean brings a unique perspective to Coupa. His career has been defined by navigating complexity; Dean’ s permanent relocation from Scotland to the United States in 1997 was a defining moment that fundamentally reoriented his professional path.“ Moving from Scotland to the US was a massive turning point for me, because it fundamentally changed how I look at business,” Dean says. The transition forced an immediate confrontation with the unknown, stripping away the comforts of a familiar environment.“ When you pick up your entire life and transplant it into a completely different culture, you’ re forced to learn how to deal with adversity very quickly,” he explains.
This period of adjustment proved instrumental in his development as a leader, particularly during his early entrepreneurial years in Chicago

and his subsequent executive roles at global firms including UPS, DHL and Blue Yonder. According to Dean, the lack of a safety net necessitated a specific type of mental toughness.“ That experience naturally built a deep sense of resilience in my personality, and it completely reshaped my perspective on risk aversion.”
“ Coming to Coupa has been the perfect culmination of my journey,” Dean says.“ It allowed me to take my‘ boots on the ground’ experience in manufacturing sales and logistics and pair it with enterprise-level strategy.”
At Coupa, Dean leverages the platform’ s source-to-pay capabilities and advanced modelling power to drive innovation in digital twins, risk management and transportation optimisation.
