Jim is Chief Executive Officer of Union Pacific Corporation and Union Pacific Railroad, bringing more than 45 years of experience to a career that began as a teenage track labourer at Canadian National in the late 1970s. He rose through the ranks before becoming Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Canadian National, where he delivered the industry’ s best operating ratio and safety record.

Jim first joined Union Pacific as Chief Operating Officer in 2019, achieving efficiency savings exceeding US $ 1bn, before returning as CEO in August 2023. His vision of“ Safety, Service and Operational Excellence” has driven measurable gains across the network, and he was named the 2025 Railroad Innovator of the Year by Progressive Railroading. Jim chairs the Association of American Railroads and is guiding Union Pacific through its proposed transcontinental merger with Norfolk Southern.
