“ People operating freighters into the UK market had to go and seek out alternate airports to operate at,” explains Duncan.“ So, we saw a spike in demand and requests to operate into Stansted.”
However, with Swissport handling approximately 70 freighters per week at Stansted and reaching capacity, it was soon forced to look to other strategic locations.
The focus shifted to airports in the Midlands, which offer proximity advantages for e-commerce logistics.
“ We had a big facility at Birmingham but some of it was used to maintain old equipment,” says Duncan.“ We cleared it out so we had a bigger space to be able to move goods through Birmingham Airport.”
