Year Founded : 1837 Industry : Consumer goods P & G was founded by brothers-inlaw William Procter , a candlemaker , and James Gamble , a soapmaker . Today , the company is the world ’ s largest producer of consumer goods , and employs 6,900 people worldwide .
According to the company ' s annual report , Pampers ( a nappy ) is the company ’ s largest brand name . Other brands include detergents ( Tide , Bounce , and Downy ), personal grooming ( Gillette razors and Head & Shoulders shampoo ), and toothpastes ( Crest and Oral-B ).
It invests over US $ 2bn every year in research and development and has no fewer than 37,000 active patents .

IBM has operations in 171 countries . It was founded in 1911 , in Endicott , New York by Charles Ranlett Flint , as the Computing- Tabulating-Recording Company ( CTR ) and was renamed International Business Machines in 1924 .
IBM makes and sells computer hardware and software , as well as providing hosting and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology .
The company is also a major research organization . Among its inventions are : automated teller machines ( ATM ), floppy disks , hard-disk drives , magnetic stripe cards , relational databases , the SQL programming language , and UPC barcodes . The IBM mainframe was the dominant computing platform during the 1960s and 1970s .
